How to Register a Marriage Online

In some places, you can register your marriage online.

A marriage is an act of commitment between two consenting adults. In some places, you can register your marriage online, which will make it legal and official. Usually, whenever you register a marriage online, you also have to file a copy with the county, so it is preserved legally. You can only register a marriage online if you live in a county where they have the ability to do this.

Instructions

1. Go to the website for your county. Find the location where they register marriages. If you don’t know where this website is, call your county deed registration office, or county courthouse, and ask about their online site. Sometimes, you will be looking for a place to fill out an application for a marriage license, instead of a place to register marriages that have already taken place.

2. Click on “Deeds and Registers," "Register a Marriage" or "Apply for Marriage License." In some counties, the website you are directed to will have the forms right there. In other counties, you will need to click through some links first to find them.

3. Input the necessary information into the box to register your marriage. If you need to apply for a license, fill out the necessary information first. Then click “submit.” Typically, you’ll be asked to send a copy of the forms to the county. In some places, simply filling out the information and submitting it is enough. In others, you can only get the forms online but they must be presented in person. The site will tell you the exact policy and law for your area. Follow it completely.
