How to Grow Madagascar Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus)

A reliable annual (it grows just one year), periwinkle is valued for its shiny green leaves almost as much as its pretty flowers in pink or white. It does beautifully in hot conditions. Growing just 6-12 inches high, it can also be used as a groundcover. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a site for planting. Periwinkle does well in the heat, so give it full sun - though a little afternoon shade in the South is a plus. It does well in just about any type of soil, though it likes rich, well-drained soil best.

    • 2

Plant periwinkle seedlings 6-10 inches apart.

    • 3

Fertilize once or twice during the growing season if desired, or work in a few spadesful of compost at planting time.

    • 4

Shear the plants in mid- to late summer in warm climates to force new, fresh growth when the plants start looking ragged.

    • 5

Pull up plants in fall once frost has felled them and discard.

Tips & Warnings

  • Periwinkle does best with ample moisture, but is able to withstand some drought.
