How to Convert a Standalone NT4 to VMware

VMware is a virtual machine program that runs operating systems inside other operating systems. VMware supports legacy operating systems such as Windows NT4, and even provides a tool for converting standalone PC operating systems to VMware virtual machines that can be run on other PCs. Newer versions of VMware Converter no longer support Windows NT4, but VMware Converter 3, still available for download, does.

Instructions

    • 1

Download VMware Converter 3 onto your Windows NT4 computer from VMware's website.

    • 2

Install VMware Converter 3 by double-clicking the downloaded "VMware-converter-3.0.3-89816.exe" file on your Windows NT4 computer and following the instructions.

    • 3

Open VMware Converter 3 by clicking "Finish" when prompted.

    • 4

Click "Continue in Starter Mode" in the "License Information" window.

    • 5

Start converting the NT4 computer's operating system to a VMware virtual machine image by clicking "Convert Machine" on the "VMware Converter" toolbar.

    • 6

Click "Next" twice at the "Welcome to the Conversion Wizard" window.

    • 7

Select the current Windows NT4 operating system as the conversion source by clicking the "Select the Type of Source you Want to Use" box and clicking "Physical Computer," then "Next."

    • 8

Use the Windows NT4 operating system's login credentials by clicking "This Local Machine" and "Next."

    • 9

Copy all system drives to the VMware virtual machine by leaving the default settings as is in the "Source Data" window and clicking "Next."

    • 10

Select a VMware image as the output type by clicking "Next" in the "Destination" window, clicking "Select the Destination Type," clicking "Other Virtual Machine" and clicking "Next."

    • 11

Type a name for your NT4 virtual machine into the "Virtual Machine Name" box.

    • 12

Select a location for the NT4 virtual machine by clicking "Browse," clicking a folder in the "Browse For Folder" window and clicking "OK."

    • 13

Select the version of VMware the virtual machine will run on by clicking "Workstation 6," "Workstation 5" or "Workstation 4" under "Type of Virtual Machine to Create" and clicking "Next." Click "Workstation 6" unless you have a specific reason for selecting an older version.

    • 14

Use the default disk allocation settings by clicking "Next."

    • 15

Click the "Network" box next to "NIC 1" in the "Network Adapters" window, click "Bridged" and click "Next."

    • 16

Convert the standalone NT4 system to a VMware virtual machine by clicking "Next" and "Finish."
