How to Troubleshoot a Kenmore Electric Smooth Top Range

Save

The Kenmore electric smooth top range, just like any other household appliance, can develop problems over time. These problems can inhibit the range from heating properly or working at all. Troubleshooting your Kenmore electric smooth top range is not difficult if you have the right knowledge going into the repair. The LED display on the front of the unit will also help with determining what the cause is and how to remedy the problem.

Things You'll Need

  • New power cord

Range Is Not Working Properly

  • Pull the range away from the wall in your kitchen. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and check the cord from any breaks or tears. Replace the power cord if you do find any breaks or tears.

  • While the range is unplugged, look on the back of the range for the electrical panel that connects the power cord's wiring to the electrical panel of the range. Make sure that all of the wires are secured to the electrical panel properly. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws holding the wires onto the electrical panel if the connection is weak.

  • Go to your breaker box and locate the range’s circuit breaker. This should be labeled with “Oven” or “Range” next to the correct breaker. Turn the breaker to the “On” position to reset it if you see that it is off.

  • Plug the range back in, and push the control knobs on the range inward and then turn it to your specified heat. Not turning the knob inward first will not power the range on. Turn the knobs all the way to the "High" setting on each burner and watch for the burners to turn red hot. If one of the burners isn't working properly, replace the burner with a new one. These can be found at your local hardware store.

  • Turn the lockouts off on the front of the range. The lockout is a small switch on the front of the range that allows you to choose power for either the oven or the range. The lockouts will prevent the range from turning on properly if they have been set for the oven and not the range.

Display Messages

  • Press the button on the front of the range that reads “OFF” if the display shows a “PF” message. This will clear the display screen and reset your clock.

  • Press the button on the front of the range to read “OFF” if the display shows an “EOF5” message. This display happens when the self cleaning mechanism cannot be triggered because of an interference with the door mechanism.

  • Find the door plunger on the front of the range’s frame. Hold this down for about 6 seconds to reset the door mechanism.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you find the repair to be too challenging, call a repair technician.
  • Electric ranges can be are dangerous and caution should be taken to ensure the power supply is cut off before working with the equipment.
