How to Weave With Beads

Bead weaving techniques include stitching with beads or creating beaded designs using a bead loom. You can create woven designs by stitching beads without any external equipment, other than a beading needle and thread. Popular bead weaving stitches include the brick stitch, the triangle stitch, the square stitch, the peyote stitch and a right angle weave. Off-loom bead weaving techniques require repetitive steps to complete rows that create the beaded designs.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 2-foot length of beading thread to begin a triangle bead weaving project. Thread the beading needle. Slide bugle beads to within 2 inches of the end of the thread.

    • 2

Tie the working thread as it exits the last bead added to the 2-inch tail thread in a double overhand knot to form a tight triangle. Insert the needle through two of the beads on the triangle.

    • 3

String two more bugle beads onto the long working thread, down to the triangle. Pass the needle through the bead that it is exiting in the triangle and the first of the two newest beads added. Pull the thread taut to form another triangle beside the first.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 to weave triangles for the desired length of the row. To step up to the next row, pass the needle through both of the new beads in the last triangle.

    • 5

Add two bugle beads to the working thread. Slide them to meet the last triangle on the first row. Pass the needle through the exit bead on the last triangle, both of the two new beads and the bottom bead on the next triangle on the first row. Pull the thread taut.

    • 6

Slide one bugle bead to the end of the working thread. Pass the needle through the open side bead on the last triangle and the bottom bead on the next triangle on the previous row and the bead just added. Pull the thread taut. You are weaving triangles on the second row that are attached to the triangles on the first row.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 to add triangles to the end of the row. Step up to the next row and repeat Steps 5 and 6 until the woven project is complete.
