How to Make a Corn Log for Squirrels

How to Make a Corn Log for Squirrels thumbnail
Keep squirrels happy with a corn log.

Squirrels, those bushy-tailed garden and bird-feeder invaders, are fun to watch as they scamper along fence posts and tree branches. Over 200 species of squirrels exist, and they live throughout the world, except in Australia. Squirrels eat nuts, leaves, roots, fruit and vegetables. Squirrel mothers have several litters every year, so squirrel populations grow quickly. Keep them out of your bird feeders and gardens by giving them their own feeder—a corn log.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut two 6-inch pieces from the cedar plank. Save the remaining wood for another project.

    • 2

Place one piece of wood on top of the other one vertically, so they create an L shape.

    • 3

Hammer the 1-inch nails into the adjoining ends of the wood to secure the L shaped platform.

    • 4

Hold the cedar platform you've made against a tree so that one plank rests against the tree, while the other one butts out, forming a shelf horizontal to the tree.

    • 5

Hammer a 4-inch nail through the vertical piece of wood and into the tree to secure the corn log to the tree.

    • 6

Hammer a 4-inch nail through the middle of the bottom of the horizontal plank so it protrudes through the top.

    • 7

Secure a fresh corn cob onto the protruding nail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Attach the corn log to a fence post or other structure instead of a tree if you prefer.

  • Don't hand feed squirrels. They carry diseases and may bite.
