How to Run a Youth Hostel
Running a youth hostel is an intriguing and interesting business. However, you need to maintain all the papers in order (paying all the taxes and following all government regulations like having enough fire-extinguishers and exit doors). Still more important, you need to build a good reputation for your hostel and create a great atmosphere at the hostel!

1
Get hired by a hostel owner. Alternatively, you can set up your own hostel but that will require a lot of time, money and energy. You will need to apply for all relevant licences and permits. If you manage an existing hostel, you will only look after that no licence is suspended, which is much easier than getting one in the first place.
-
2
Make sure your personnel is friendly and hard-working. If some of the staff do not satisfy your high requirements, do not hesitate to replace them. Remember that a nice hostel is impossible with a cranky receptionist.

3
Refurbish the interior and exterior of the hostel. While a major reconstruction can cost a lot of money, cleaning and painting some parts of your hostel does not. Make sure your hostel is clean and cheerful. Try to create a cozy, youthful atmosphere in the hostel--put up pictures of young celebrities, and other symbols of youth.

4
Advertise your campaign on media popular with young people. In addition to targeted Internet advertising you can try promoting your hostel through social-network websites.
