How to Design a Product Label

How to Design a Product Label thumbnail
The product label gives all kinds of information about the product, and should catch the customer's eye.

If you are in your own business, it is best to try to do as much for yourself as you can in order to save money. Starting a product line can end up costing a lot on its own without factoring in the prices of packaging, logo design, and labeling. With a little knowledge of graphic design, you can create a label that you know goes along with your vision and includes just the information you want it to.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of information that you want to go onto the label. This should include the company name and logo, the product name, a description and/or ingredients, and possibly a tag line or some art.

    • 2

Measure the packaging of your product and determine what kind and size label you will want. If it is square, you may want a sticky label on the front and back. If it will be hanging, you will want a hang tab label that folds over the top. Cut out the proper size with regular white paper and roughly sketch your information onto it. Staple and tape this first draft label to the packaging to visualize.

    • 3

Resize the blank page in your design program to the size you want your label to be, in inches. Make two pages if you will have a front and back.

    • 4

Change the color of the background to the color you want your label to be. Use bright warm colors to make it pleasing on the eye. Add any background art or texture onto this layer as well. This will usually be the same color and art for both the front and back.

    • 5

Design your logo if you haven’t done so already on a separate page. Choose bright colors that stand out from far away. Copy and paste it onto the front label with a transparent background so your original background will show through. Add company name and tag line near the logo on the front. Add description and ingredients, usually to the back label, in the center.

    • 6

Print out a test label and cut to fit the packaging. Make note of any changes you want to make in terms of size, shape, color, or layout. Make sure your label is eye-catching and that your logo is visible from a distance. Revise, and print a final draft label.

Tips & Warnings

  • After designing your label the way you like it, you can print it yourself if you have a quality printer, or you can take it to a professional printer who will have many choices of specialty papers.

  • Go shopping where similar products exist and notice other product labels to get ideas of how you want yours to look first.

  • Do not plagiarize other product labels.

  • Make sure that you have all the required information on the label according to your state’s law for your type of product. This is especially true for food products.
