Everyone knows popcorn is a great snack, either for movie marathoning or pre-dinner munching. Some of us like it plain, some buttered; and some even like it seasoned or sweetened. You can take your popped popcorn and turn it into cinnamon popcorn in a few easy steps.
Choose Your Coating
Cinnamon popcorn can be made with or without a coating element like oil, honey or butter. For every 4 cups of popped popcorn, add about 1/8 cup warm melted butter (salted or unsalted), vegetable/canola/corn oil or honey to a large mixing bowl.
If you prefer to avoid the extra calories, simply skip this step.
You have a few options when it comes to cinnamon:
- using pre-ground cinnamon;
- grinding whole cinnamon sticks;
- crushing spicier cinnamon candies, like Red Hots;
- or adding a few dashes of cinnamon extract.
Add your cinnamon flavoring to the butter, oil or honey, or to the empty bottom of the mixing bowl. With a fork or whisk, blend the cinnamon into the coating, if you're using one. Add salt here if you like the salty-sweet balance.
Toss It All Together
Add your popped popcorn to the mixing bowl, tossing with your hands or a wooden spoon to coat all kernels evenly. If you did not use a coating, your popcorn may require a light sprinkling of water to make sure the cinnamon flavoring sticks.
Serve and Enjoy
Since cinnamon is considered healthy and is usually a mild spice, serve or enjoy the popcorn with a shaker of cinnamon on the side, just in case you want to add more. Consider adding brown sugar to your coating mix, too, if you really want to amp up the sweetness and make your own version of a caramel corn.
