How Can I Control Access to Web Pages?

Employers and parents and may want to control access to certain web pages and restrict Internet content. While there are numerous commercial programs available on the market that restrict websites, there is a simple and free technique to do it on your home computer. Nevertheless, a tech-savvy teenager or employee might already know a work-around, so you may have to do something a little different to keep blocked content out of their hands.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that you're logged-in as an administrator, which is the main account/profile on your computer. Right-click the "Internet Explorer" icon. The icon is typically on your desktop. If it isn't, go to the "Control Panel" and click the "Internet Options" icon. The "Internet Properties" dialog box subsequently appears, which allows you to tweak the settings for Internet access.

    • 2

Click the "Content" tab at the top of the "Internet Properties" dialog box. The Internet control panel appears, which allows you to restrict viewing access to specific Web pages.

    • 3

Click the "Enable" button in the "Content Advisor" section. A menu with a sliding bar has three options: an “Unrestricted Access” button, a “Marginally Restricted Access” button (which blocks intimidating content except for educational material), and a “Completely Restricted Access” button (which blocks content considered inappropriate for children). Microsoft predetermined which content is inappropriate. However, you can block additional websites by navigating to the “Approved Sites” tab of the “Content Advisor” dialog box. Then type the URL of the site that you wish to block in the “Allow this site” box. Next, click the “Never” button. The site is then blocked.

Tips & Warnings

  • The above strategy is for Microsoft Windows running Internet Explorer. You can also filter content for Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari. However, the steps are completely different from those used for Internet Explorer.
