How to Make Imitation Stained Glass

Paint imitation stained glass.

Stained glass is expensive and not always practical in modern homes. To fit the windows of your home, most new stained glass has to be custom ordered, making it very expensive. While you can purchase pieces of antique glass to hang over a window, older stained glass can also be costly and impractical. Because older windows were not tempered, they create sharp shards when they break. Get the look of stained glass without all of the expense and hassle by creating your own imitation with glass paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a piece of glass on top of a stained glass pattern. Rub the front of the glass with denatured alcohol. This will remove all grease and residue from the glass.

    • 2

Trace the pattern with the liquid leading to copy the pattern onto the glass. Let the leading dry for 48 hours.

    • 3

Create textures on the glass. Squirt a pea-sized amount of clear silicone onto one section of the glass. Dab the sea sponge into the silicone to create some texture. Repeat in any other areas where you want the same texture. To create a different texture, squirt a pea-sized amount of clear caulk onto another section of the glass and move the silicone around in a circular motion. Repeat in other areas where you want this same texture. Leave some areas of the glass clear and smooth. Let the silicone dry overnight.

Paint the glass with glass paint. Use a light hand to apply a thin layer of paint. The paint should be mostly translucent when dry. Use any combination of paint to create your design. Allow the paint to dry before hanging the glass.
