Deed polls can be used to change your name legally.

Changing a name on a deed poll is a common way in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to legally change your name without the need to hire a lawyer or go to court. You can change a name for any reason as long as it is not in furtherance of a criminal purpose. You may choose any name you want as long as it is not vulgar or blasphemous. Changing the name is accomplished by filing an application and payment of a fee.

Instructions

    • 1

Access an online deed documentation service such as the Legal Deed Service or the UK Deed Poll Service. Locate and access the "how do I apply" section on the website.

    • 2

Choose an application option. Generally, you can apply online, over the phone or in person. Some services also allow you apply by mail.

    • 3

Complete you application as instructed. All applications will require you to provide information about yourself such as your current name, address and title, and your proposed new name. You will also need to select a payment option. Generally if you apply online you can pay by most forms of electronic payment. Alternatively, if you apply in person you will also be able to pay by cash or check.

    • 4

Review and submit your application along with payment. The deed service will review your application and verify that the information provided is accurate. If done in person or over the phone, the clerk will ask you to verify that the information on the application is correct. If you applied online, the deed service will send you an e-mail containing your submitted information for you to review.

    • 5

Wait for your deed. The deed service will prepare an original deed detailing your name change. Depending on which delivery option you selected, the original deed will either be available for pick up or will be mailed to you directly.

    • 6

Sign the deed in the presence of a witness who is at least 18 years old, not related to you and does not live at the same address as you. Once you have signed your name, your name will have been officially changed.

    • 7

Use your signed deed poll to change any legal and official documents that need updating with your new name including your passport, driver's license and bank records.
