A boutonniere is an accessory for men dressing for a formal event such as prom or a wedding. A boutonniere is essentially a corsage for a male but smaller and worn on the lapel for the duration of the formal event. Purchasing a boutonniere can be expensive; flowers have a tendency to be pricey. Fortunately, with basic materials you can easily put together a boutonniere. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Cut the stem of the flower for the main bloom to about 3 inches long. Trim thorns, sprouts or other growth until the stem is smooth. Make sure the bloom is not too large. The head of a silver dollar is a good size that won't overpower the look. If the boutonniere is for a wedding, take cues from the bridal bouquet in selecting a flower, or a rosebud, small calla lily or hydrangea would be good choices. Be creative though, and make sure that the bloom you choose reflects the festivities of the occasion.

2
Create a bed or background for the bloom. Gather a small amount of baby's breath and greenery and make sure they are only about the same height as the flower. Place the flower on top of the greenery with the baby's breath between them.

Tie a length of silk ribbon around the boutonniere, creating a modest-sized bow at the front. Choose a ribbon in a basic color such as light pink, blue or cream. Alternately, select a ribbon that coincides with the colors of the event or with the dress of the wearer's escort.

5
Slide a corsage or hat pin vertically into the green tape for use in affixing the boutonniere to the lapel.

Do not select flowers with droopy petals, or petals prone to falling, as the flowers will break apart quickly.
