How to Get All the Chararters on Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart DS is similar to Mario Kart for Wii and systems prior, only you are using a hand-held system instead of a game controller or wheel. You must race in a go kart against other Super Mario characters to receive gold trophies. Receiving the gold trophies will unlock more race tracks, go karts and even characters. Other than the characters you start with in Mario Kart DS, you can unlock three additional characters: Daisy, Dry Bones and Waluigi.

Unlock Daisy

Select a character of your choosing.

Race the “Retro Grand Prix” set to 50cc. The “Retro Grand Prix” is a set of races using the older Mario Kart game tracks, and 50cc is the easiest race setting.

Win the gold trophy for every cup in the “Retro Grand Prix” to unlock Daisy. The “Retro Grand Prix” consists of the “Shell Cup,” “Banana Cup,” “Leaf Cup” and “Lightning Cup.” Each has four races.
Unlock Dry Bones

Select a character at the start screen.

Race the “Nitro Grand Prix” set to 50cc. The “Nitro Grand Prix” is a set of races specific for Mario Kart DS.

Win the gold trophy for each cup in the “Nitro Grand Prix” to unlock Dry Bones. The “Nitro Grand Prix” consists of the “Mushroom Cup,” “Flower Cup,” “Star Cup” and “Special Cup.” Each cup has four races.
Unlock Waluigi

Select a character at the start screen.

Race the “Retro Grand Prix” set to 100cc (a little bit tougher than 50cc races).
