Make sure you're prepared for the high-stress of being a stockbroker.

Stockbroker careers in Canada and across the world are considered by many as a fascinating and attractive profession. If you are fortunate enough to have a large client base and many contacts, you could be making a significant amount of money. That said, being a stockbroker involves long hours, dedication and usually generates an extremely stressful work environment. Because of this, not everyone is suited for this career. Ensure that you have done your research before beginning the long process of becoming a stockbroker in Canada.

Instructions

  1. Step 1

    • 1

Take math, economics and business in high school. Begin to learn about investments and their returns by managing a small stock (if you are under 18, you can do this under a parent's name).

    • 2

Consult your high school career counselor on colleges and universities in your area that offer finance, economics or business.

    • 3

Enroll in the college or university of your choice working towards obtaining a degree in finance, economics or business.

    • 4

Complete the Canadian Securities Institute Securities Course on line. You can expect this course will take you between 135-200 hours to complete before you are ready to take the exam.

    • 5

Pass the Canadian Securities Course. All provinces require the Financial Planning Course to be completed and that you pass the Examination within three years.

    • 6

Join your local Chamber of Commerce to begin your networking process. This will allow you to gain new contacts and support.

    • 7

Research stock brokerage firms in your area or in the area where you would like to work. When preparing your resume, be sure to emphasize your education. When interviewing, be professional and aggressive. Your interviewer will be looking for someone who has the drive and ambition to work in this stressful environment.

    • 8

Prepare to work in a competitive environment when you begin working at the firm. Firms often hire many graduating students at one time, anticipating that many will find the pressure too much.

    • 9

Continue to build your contact list and portfolio throughout the years to become a successful stockbroker.
