"Counter-Strike: Source" features many weapons to master.

"Counter-Strike: Source" is a frantically fast-paced multiplayer shooter released by Valve in late 2004. Based on "Counter-Strike," but remade with the Source engine, which debuted in "Half-Life 2", "Counter-Strike: Source" offered a modernized overhaul to an already extremely popular game. "Counter-Strike: Source" is a multiplayer-only game, with the exception of playing alone with bots in multiplayer-like situations, and so an active Internet connection is required to play.

Instructions

    • 1

Install Steam. You can download the installer from the official website for free (see Resources). Once it is installed, set up a free account.

    • 2

Procure a copy of the game. This is most easily done through Steam, Valve's software distribution platform, but you may be able to find physical copies on websites, such as eBay or Amazon, or find other digital copies. Either way, you will need Steam to play.

    • 3

Install the game. This can be done from the Steam library page, or the store page where you purchased it. If you have a non-Steam copy, just run the installer as you would with other software.

    • 4

Launch the game. You will be brought to the main menu.

    • 5

From the main menu, you can set your options, such as controls and visual settings. When you are finished customizing, click "Find Server".

    • 6

Go through the list of servers, and find one that appeals to you. Many servers are available, and if you are a first-time player, you might want to find a "noobie" server to play in, so that people don't have high expectations of your soon-to-be-honed skills.

    • 7

Move your character via the WSAD keys. You can crouch by pushing control, and jump with the space bar. If you are in a "buy zone", which most default maps include, you can push "b" to access the buy page.

    • 8

Buy other weapons. You can carry two guns; one primary gun and a pistol. By default, you will spawn with a pistol. This is all done through the use of buy zones. You also can buy equipment such as grenades, body armor, helmets and flashbangs (grenades that provide a loud flash but cause little damage). You earn money by killing the enemy and completing objectives.

    • 9

Plant a bomb at one of two sites, if you are on a terrorist team in a bomb/defuse map. Each map will have specific objectives. A player on the terrorist team will randomly spawn with the bomb, but it can be dropped and given to other players. If that player is killed, another terrorist must pick up the bomb. The counter-terrorist (CT) team must either defuse the bomb, or kill all of the terrorists before it is planted.

    • 10

Reach and escort hostages to the hostage rescue zone in the CT spawn area, if you are on the CT team in a hostage rescue map. These maps include four hostages, kept in two different places on the map. The terrorists must slay all of the CTs or hold out until time is up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Getting good at "Counter-Strike: Source" is all about practice. Play lots and often, and you will improve.

  • Playing Gungame (maps that begin with "gg_") is a good way to practice with various weapons.

  • You can add filters to the server list, such as map names, game types, and number of players.

  • "Counter-Strike: Source" is very competitive, and very hard to play at first. Don't get discouraged.
