Despite its size, a heart rug is a great beginner's crochet project because it is best made with chunky yarn and a large crochet hook, or with strips of fabric to make a crocheted rag rug. Not just for Valentine's Day--though a heart rug would add ambiance and charm to any V-Day party--heart rugs are perfect for little girl's rooms, bathrooms, doormats and more. Whether you add some old-country charm with a hand-crocheted heart rug or use rag strips to get into the eco-groove and make an recycled rug, a heart rug will be sure to warm both your heart and your feet.

Things You'll Need

  • 8 yards of 1-inch wide fabric strips, or thick and chunky yarn
  • 9-10 mm (N) hook

Getting Started

Chain 40 stitches with your crochet hook using either yarn or fabric strips. Skip the first chain from the hook and slip stitch into the next 18 stitches. Skip one chain, then make single crochet stitches into each of the next 18 stitches, making 4 single crochet stitches in the last chain.

Make one single crochet stitch in each of the next 18 stitches, then make 3 single crochet stitches in the next chain stitch. Make one single crochet in each of the next 18 stitches, then make 4 single crochet stitches in the last stitch.

Make one single crochet stitch in each of the next 18 stitches. Skip the next 2 single crochet stitches, then make one single crochet stitch in each of the next 17 stitches. Make 2 single crochet stitches in each of the next two stitches, then one single crochet stitch in each of the next 20 stitches. Make 3 single crochet stitches in the next single crochet stitch, then make one single crochet stitch in each of the next 20 stitches. Make 2 single crochet stitches in each of the next two stitches, then make one single crochet in each of the next 17 stitches. There should be a total of 87 single crochet stitches when you are done.

Skip the next two single crochet stitches, then make one single crochet stitch in each of the next 16 stitches. Make two single crochet stitches in the next single crochet stitch (this is an increase), then one single crochet stitch in the next stitch, then repeat (increase). Make two more single crochet stitches in the next stitch (increase), then 21 single crochet stitches, then 3 single crochet stitches in the next stitch. Make 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch (increase), then one single crochet in the next stitch, then repeat (increase). Make 2 more single crochet stitches in the next stitch (increase) then one single crochet in each of the next 16 stitches for a total of 93 stitches.

Repeat as above, increasing by six stitches on each round for at least 15 more rounds (or more if desired). Make one slip stitch in the last single crochet stitch and finish off.
