How to Get Proto-Drakes in WoW

How to Get Proto-Drakes in WoW thumbnail
Proto-drakes are swift, powerful and imposing, making them a top choice for your World of Warcraft mount.

World of Warcraft is a massive online computer game with an expansive landscape to explore. Traversing this terrain can prove difficult without a proper mount, especially the jagged mountains and deep gorges of Outland and Northrend. For these exotic locales, nothing beats the versatility of a flying mount. Though there are more than 100 mounts available in the game, you'll want to fly with style to stand out from the crowd. Proto-drakes are dragon-like mounts that look cool and soar with speed, making them an excellent choice for your traveling needs. There are seven unique proto-drakes to choose from.

Instructions

    • 1

Travel to Utgarde Pinnacle, located in the Howling Fjord of Northrend. Fight and slay the boss named Skadi the Ruthless. One of his rare loot items is a blue proto-drake, which you have about a 1.2 percent chance of getting per kill of Skadi.

    • 2

Head to the Sholazar Basin in Northrend. Perform daily quests for the Oracles faction until your reputation with them reaches "revered" status. Once revered, you can buy a mysterious egg from the vendor there. This egg will hatch after seven days, and you have a roughly 2 percent chance of hatching a green proto-drake.

    • 3

Go to the Storm Peaks of Northrend. Around the central area of the map, a very rare Time-Lost proto-drake can spawn, and will be seen flying through the sky. If you can track it down and slay it, you can loot a mountable Time-Lost proto-drake from its corpse.

Open the achievements menu in World of Warcraft, and look for the achievement titled "Glory of the Hero" under the dungeons and raids category. This achievement requires you to complete more than 30 different objectives, all involving Heroic dungeons within Northrend. Complete this achievement, and you will be mailed in-game a red proto-drake.

    • 5

Keep the achievements menu open, and find the achievement called "Glory of the Ulduar Raider (10 player)." For this achievement, you must complete the 13 listed objectives, which all involve dungeons in the Ulduar region of Storm Peaks. You earn a rusted proto-drake for successfully earning this achievement.

    • 6

Look right below the "Glory of the Ulduar Raider (10 player)" achievement to find "Glory of the Ulduar Raider (25 player)." This achievement has the same objectives as the 10-player version, except they must now be performed in the harder 25-player Heroic edition. Completing these objectives earns you an ironbound proto-drake.

    • 7

Look under the world events category of achievements to find the one titled "What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been." World events are holiday-themed activities that occur on specific calendar days, such as Halloween or Christmas, and this achievement requires that you participate and complete objectives for eight specific holidays. Completing this task will earn you a violet proto-drake.

Tips & Warnings

  • There were two other proto-drakes available in World of Warcraft: the black proto-drake and the plagued proto-drake. As of July 2010, the ability to get these mounts has been removed from the game, and are thus no longer obtainable.
