You must obtain a "Standard Certification" in order to teach in New Jersey.

In order to qualify for a position as teacher in New Jersey, you must obtain a teaching certificate. In New Jersey, the "Standard Certification" is the teaching certificate that allows a teacher to be hired by a school district as a teacher in a permanent position. You can begin your application for a "Standard Certification" through the New Jersey Department of Education website, but it must be completed by submitting your additional materials to the Department of Education by mail or in person.

      Obtain a Bachelor's degree. You must receive a Bachelor's degree from a college or university as a prerequisite to applying for a "Standard Certification" in New Jersey. There is no required major, but you must graduate with a grade point average of 2.75 or higher on the 4.0 scale.

      Take and pass "The Praxis Series" test. The Praxis exams are used to certify teachers in specific subjects, and are administered by the Educational Testing Service. You can register for the Praxis exam by telephone at 800-853-6773, or through the Praxis exam website.

      Successfully complete the hygiene and substance abuse exam. The exam is given at your local county Department of Education office. Contact your local county Department of Education office for more information on the exam. You may opt out of the exam if you have received training in the military or if you have taken a similar course in college.

      Fulfill your student-teacher requirement. You must enroll in a program that allows you to be mentored or another similar program administered by a college or university that allows you to teach for one year. Contact the New Jersey Department of Education, or your college, for programs in your area.

      Complete the New Jersey application for teacher certification. You can begin the application online and complete it by submitting materials to the Department of Education, or you can obtain and complete a paper copy of the entire application. Submit the application, your college transcripts, your Praxis score sheets, a notarized and signed copy of your applicable citizenship form, and the required application fee of $190.
