A homemade tassel is a nice way to finish off a bookmark. Tassels add a nice flair of decoration to the end and anchor the bookmark to keep it from sliding out of a book. Tassels can be made from a thin yarn, embroidery floss or crochet thread in a matching or contrasting color. Attach a tassel at the top of your crafted bookmark, or place one tassel at each end of a crocheted chain for a quick and effective bookmark.
Things You'll Need
- Small piece of cardboard
- Yarn, floss or thread
Cut a piece of cardboard the height of the desired tassel and approximately 1-1/2 inches wide.
Cut a piece of yarn or floss approximately 1 to 1-1/2 inches long or longer if desired for hanging. Place it horizontally against the cardboard.
Wrap the yarn or floss around the cardboard vertically. Continue wrapping until the desired thickness of the tassel is created.
Grasp the piece of yarn that was placed horizontally in Step 2 on either end. It should now be under the wrapped yarn. Pull on either end to gather the wrapped yarn and tie it securely.
Slip the wrapped yarn off the cardboard. Smooth the yarn down, holding the tied section at the top.
Tie another piece of yarn tightly around the bulk of the tassel, approximately one-quarter to one-third of the way down the tassel. Wrap the yarn around the neck and tuck the ends into the tassel.
Cut through the yarn at the bottom of the tassel, freeing the tassel ends. Trim the edges so that all of the yarn pieces are the same length.
Tips & Warnings
- Use floss or fine yarn or thread for small tassels. Larger tassels look fine with larger-size yarn.
