How to Practice & Prepare for the CDL Test
To drive a commercial vehicle, a CDL license is required. Acquiring your CDL license can open up many new career opportunities. The CDL, or commercial driver's license, much like the non-commercial driver's license, includes both a written test and a driving exam. To pass the CDL tests, which are more complex in nature than the non-commercial licensing tests, more practice and preparation is required.

1
Acquire the CDL Test Study Guide from your state's local department of transportation office.
-
2
Highlight key points in each section of the study guide. Many study guides have already highlighted or underlined key points to remember in advance for you. Write the key points you've highlighted on 3-by-5 index cards.
-
-
3
Separate your index cards by the sections in the study guide and paper clip them together. Read each section's index cards several times a day until you've memorized the key points before moving on to the next section.
-
4
Make copies of the practice exam in the back of your study booklet. Take the practice exam several times until you've achieved a near perfect score. Ninety-percent or higher is ideal.
-
5
Enroll in a DOT-approved driving school. You will need a truck to take the driving test in; most driving schools provide a truck for testing as part of their tuition.
