How to Get a New York Tax ID Number

When you start a new business, you are typically required to register that new business with both the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and your state. By registering your business, you get the business set up to report federal and state taxes. In some states, you may have a separate business tax ID number for federal and state. In other states, such as New York, you are able to use one tax ID number for both federal and state taxes. In fact, New York lets businesses use an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS as a tax ID number.
