How to Make Feather Headpieces

How to Make Feather Headpieces thumbnail
Colorful peacock feathers provide visual interest in a feathered headpiece, but standard crafting feathers also work well.

Feather headpieces, also sometimes known as fascinators, provide a bold fashion statement for any occasion. Wear a feather headpiece, and you can dress up your plain old jeans and T-shirt outfit or embellish a look for a special day when you pair one with an evening gown or wedding dress. With basic crafting skills, you can learn how to make feather headpieces for yourself, or make up a few for friends and loved ones for your next gift-giving holiday.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of felt fabric into an oval or rectangular shape that is just slightly larger than the hair barrette or clip that will form the foundation of your feather headpiece. Cut a second piece of felt that is small enough to fit over the underside of your hair clip. Set the smaller piece to the side.

    • 2

Glue or sew feathers onto the larger felt piece you cut out in Step 1. Cover as much of the felt piece as you can with the feathers, adding them in layers of color for added interest. Allow the tips of the feathers to stick out off one edge of the felt piece, and then cut them off after you have added all of your feathers.

    • 3

Glue sequins onto the top of the feathers, near the base. This will help hide the feather stems and will also add sparkle to your finished feather headpieces. Sew or glue on buttons as well to change up the look of the piece.

    • 4

Glue your large felt piece to the top of your hair barrette or clip. Glue the second piece of felt to the underside, sandwiching the barrette or clip between the two pieces of felt. This will help your feather headpiece hold itself together.

    • 5

Fasten the barrette or hair clip into your hair and wear your feather headpiece with pride.
