How to Sew Queen-Sized Fitted Sheets
A queen-sized mattress is several inches narrower than a king, making the size more convenient for smaller bedrooms. Despite this advantage, queen-sized linens are more difficult to find. If a store doesn't carry the print you want in the size you need, you can easily convert a king flat sheet into a customized, fitted sheet for your queen-sized bed.
Instructions
-
-
1
Lay a king-sized flat sheet on top of your queen-sized mattress, top side down. There should be excess material hanging over each edge of the mattress.
-
2
Press the sheet flat against the sides of the mattress. This will cause a fold at each corner, where the fabric comes together.
-
-
3
Pin the folds of the fabric vertically along the corner. Pin all four corners this way and carefully remove the sheet from the mattress.
-
4
Sew each corner with a straight stitch on your sewing machine. Trim the excess material with scissors as close to the stitches as possible without cutting into them.
-
5
Put the sheet back on the mattress, pulling the sewn corners down around the corners of the mattress. The seams on the corners should be facing out.
-
6
Gather the horizontal edges of the fabric around one of the corners and pin the gather in place. The gather should be about 5 inches long.
-
7
Cut a 5-inch piece of elastic and pin it along the gather.
-
8
Sew the elastic to the sheet, holding the gather in place. Use the longest and widest stitch settings possible to sew the elastic.
-
9
Gather and sew the elastic along each corner edge in the same way.

Tips & Warnings
Look for flat sheets at thrift stores to find cheap sheets in good condition.
If you have an extra deep mattress, you cannot use a standard king size flat sheet—the sheet will be too short.
