Vacuum tube amplifier are often sought after by guitar players because of their analog circuitry and the warm sound they produce. Many players believe that vacuum tubes produce a more pleasing tone. The downside to using a vacuum tube amplifier is that over time, the tubes wear out and must be replaced. The tubes can be removed from their sockets for inspection and replacement without the use of any special tools.

      Make sure your amplifier has been switched off and the power cable removed and allowed to cool if it has been used recently.

      Wrap a lint free cloth or small towel around the tube you wish to remove. This will protect your hands in case the tube should break.

      Grip the tube firmly through the towel or cloth and pull straight up from the socket. Tubes do not screw into place, so avoid any twisting motion which could damage the socket pins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid handling vacuum tubes with your bare hands. Any oil from your fingers that gets on the tube's glass surface can cause a temperature difference when the tube is in use, and reduce its lifespan.
