How to Cut the Edge of Shingles
During shingle roof installations, it is often necessary to cut the edge of shingles on one side of the roof. Generally, the starting shingles are aligned to a starter strip that has an adhesive which assists in keeping shingles from blowing off in windy conditions. The alignment of shingles on the finished side of the roof is often created by measuring an overhang, drawing a chalk line and cutting the shingles. This is done during or after the installation, as different contractors favor their own cutting techniques. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the correct shingle overhang for your area, usually from 1/8 to 1/2 inch. The roof should overhang enough to shed water into gutters or away from the fascia boards. You do not want to cut off the starter strip material on the leading edge of the roof, as this will make your shingles vulnerable in wind. This starter strip is a wide self-adhesive tape. If your overhang has a tape running along the edge, do not cut it off.

2
Snap a blue chalk line on your roof at the correct overhang. Do not use red chalk as it might not wash off easily.

3
Cut the tiles using tin snips or a hooked utility knife. It is sometimes helpful to use a yardstick or level as a guide during cutting to help keep you straight.

Tips & Warnings
Check your roof regularly for nail pops, loose shingles, gaps or problems. Cold condition environments are subject to more complex roofing designs so it is a good idea to ask a roofer before making cuts on a non-leaking roof.
