How to Make a Working Model Shield Volcano thumbnail
Children will enjoy learning about geology by creating a model of a shield volcano.

Shield volcanoes are often violent and explosive when they erupt. If you are teaching students about shield volcanoes, geology or volcanic activity, they can learn much more when you allow them to make a functioning model of a shield volcano. Crumple up pieces of newspaper.

    • 2

Tape the bottom of a paper towel tube with duct tape.

    • 3

Place the paper towel tube vertically in the center of the jelly roll pan with the taped side down.

    • 4

Form the crumpled balls of newspaper into a volcano shape around the tube, and duct tape them into place.

    • 5

Combine 4 cups of flour and 2 cups of water in a pot.

    • 6

Heat the mixture until it bubbles.

    • 7

Remove the mixture from the heat and let it completely cool.

    • 8

Spread the flour mixture over the newspaper volcano. Do not get the mixture inside the paper towel tube. Allow the mixture to dry completely.

    • 9

Paint the volcano with brown or green acrylic paint to resemble an actual volcano. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 10

Place a funnel into the open end of the paper towel tube. Pour one cup of baking soda into the funnel.

    • 11

Combine 1 cup of white vinegar and 10 drops of red food coloring in a glass.

    • 12

Pour the vinegar mixture into the funnel and quickly remove the funnel to allow the volcano to erupt.
