How to Clean & Restore Marble

Marble countertops require special care to retain their luster.

Marble floors and countertops require special care when cleaning. Although the stone feels hard, marble is a soft stone that can be easily be stained or damaged. Proper cleaning, stain removal and polishing will restore the stone's natural beauty.

Things You'll Need

• Sponge
• Dishwashing soap
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Cotton cloth
• Marble polish

Instructions

1. Clean marble with a sponge soaked in 1 to 2 cups of warm water mixed with 5 drops of mild dishwashing soap to remove dirt and debris. Thoroughly cleaning the marble before polishing will enhance the stone's sheen.

2. Remove stubborn stains by applying a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to the discolored area. Leave on the marble for 1 to 2 minutes. Wipe clean with a damp sponge and pat until thoroughly dry.

3. Coat countertop surfaces with marble specific polish. Rub the polish onto the stone's surface using a circular motion. Allow the polish to dry for 2 to 3 minutes. Wipe off with a dry cotton cloth. Marble polish may be purchased in a grocery or home improvement store in the household cleaners aisle. Polishing marble floors is difficult and should be done by a professional floor cleaning company.

Tips & Warnings

• Clean spills immediately with a damp sponge to prevent stains.

• Always use a coaster under beverage glasses placed on a marble surface.

• Never use an abrasive cleaner of any kind on marble.

• Test a small, unnoticeable area of the marble before applying any product.
