How to Make a Rubber Band Chain Necklace

How to Make a Rubber Band Chain Necklace thumbnail
Regular brown rubber bands can be used to make a chain necklace.

A rubber band chain necklace is easy and almost free to make, and has recently become a trendy accessory thanks to Soulja Boy. The rapper started wearing a rubber band necklace to imitate the look of a large gold chain. All you need to replicate this are regular brown rubber bands that can be purchased in a variety of lengths and thicknesses. If you’re patient enough, you can wait to get the desired amount of rubber bands by collecting from produce, newspapers and mail. Colored bands would create an interesting look as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold one rubber band in each hand, squeezing each together at the middle with your thumb and pointer finger.

    • 2

Cross the rubber bands to make an "X." Fold each rubber band toward its other end, hooking the two bands together.

    • 3

Thread the pencil through both loops of one of the rubber bands. This will secure the connection so you don’t have to hold it any longer.

    • 4

Squeeze a third rubber band together at its middle, and thread one end through both loops of the rubber band that the pencil is not holding.

    • 5

Thread a fourth rubber band through the loops of the third. Continue this process until you reach the desired length for your rubber band chain.

    • 6

Remove the pencil and tie both loops of both ends of the rubber bands together to close the chain and make a necklace.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add a real necklace clasp to the end if your chain is too short to fit over your head.

  • To make your chain look more like Soulja Boy's, use several skinny rubber bands for each link of the chain. Instead of threading one rubber band at a time through the loops, thread two or three at a time. This will require more rubber bands.

  • Rubber bands contain latex, which can cause severe allergic reactions in some people. Do not wear a rubber band chain necklace if you are allergic to latex.

  • Pulling rubber bands taut and then releasing them could cause an injury to you or someone nearby.
