How to Build a Winter Survival Kit
When facing a cold, snowy or otherwise perilous winter, you must always be prepared. Preparedness for a worst-case scenario, like becoming trapped by fallen snow, can be the difference between surviving the season and succumbing to its dangers. By stocking a self-made winter survival kit, you can increase your chances of faring well in a tough situation.
Things You'll Need
- Coffee can
- Twine
- Safety pins
- Food
- Book
- Hat, gloves
- Thermal heat packs
- Candles, matches
- Flashlight
- Road flares
- Glow sticks
- Toilet paper
Instructions
-
-
1
Empty and wash out a two or three-pound coffee can. Punch three equidistant holes near the rim—not on the lid itself.
-
2
Include three 20-inch pieces of twine. If you are in a scenario in which you have no water available, you can fill the can with snow and tie the twine through the holes to suspend the can over a flame, melting the snow.
-
-
3
Include three large safety pins for suspending the can from the roof of your vehicle.
-
4
Plan for your nutritional needs by throwing in packets of soup and hot chocolate, along with protein bars, jerky, dehydrated fruit and nuts.
-
5
Being trapped may be a lonely experience. Pack a small book or other reading material to pass the time.
-
6
Pack clothing and other accessories to keep you warm, such as extra gloves and socks, a hat, and thermal heat packs.
-
7
Pack heat sources, such as candles and matches, both for heating a snow-filled coffee can and igniting flares.
-
8
Take along light sources, such as a flashlight, road flares and glow sticks.
-
9
Remember that you may have to perform routine bodily functions—pack a roll of toilet paper.
