How to Clean Carpets with Enzymes
Enzyme cleaners are especially helpful in cleaning carpets that have been soiled by pet feces and urine. The enzymes in these cleaners break down the proteins in the pet excrement. Without the proteins, bacteria cannot feed and produce the foul smell that characterizes pet odor. Before beginning to clean your carpets with a carpet shampooer and an enzyme cleaner, you should check the manufacturer's directions on both products, as there are sometimes differences in instructions. Tips & Warnings
Check the manufacturer's instructions on your enzyme cleaner before following the proportion of one ounce of cleaner to one gallon of water. This proportion is generally true of most enzyme cleaners but not all.
Check the manufacturer's instructions on the carpet shampooer to make sure it is designed to handle an enzyme cleaner.
If you are spot-cleaning a carpet, mix the enzyme cleaner with warm water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Saturate the spot you are cleaning with the enzyme cleaner and allow it to sit for 1-24 hours before blotting up excess liquid with a clean cloth. Vacuum the spot before it completely dries.
Avoid over-wetting the carpet. If it is necessary to treat your carpet again with an enzyme cleaner, allow it to dry completely before repeating the cleaning process.
