How to Install Schon Bamboo Floor Over Concrete

Concrete may be a solid form of flooring, but it’s usually not comfortable for a living space. If you’ve got a slab floor or finished basement and you want something more inviting, consider bamboo flooring. Like wood flooring, bamboo can often be installed with glue rather than nails, allowing it to go directly over concrete. Schon flooring makes a line of glue-down wood and bamboo floors specifically designed for this installation method. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Spread flooring adhesive along the side of the floor where you want to start, using a glue trowel and bringing the line of adhesive about 2 feet out from the wall.

    • 2

Lay the first course of Schon bamboo planks along the edge of the floor, linking them together end to end and setting them in the glue with the grooved sides of the boards facing the wall. Put shims between the boards and the wall, to create a thin gap there that will allow the floor to expand with climate changes. Cut the boards at the ends on a miter saw to fit.

    • 3

Lay additional courses by linking the boards together along the sides of the first course, pressing them in tightly and laying them out so the ends are staggered. Work your way across the floor, spreading more glue as needed, until you are approaching the far wall and running out of space. Let the partly laid floor set overnight.

    • 4

Lay the final section the next day, when the first section is dry and solid.

    • 5

Length-cut the boards for the final course with a table saw, so they will fit against the ending wall with a small space there. Cover the spaces when you trim the floor.
