The smell of pet urine is enough to make most people cover their noses. Accidents are a common part of pet ownership, but you should clean them up immediately to avoid that dank, ammonia-laden odor commonly associated with pet urine. There are several chemical products made to remove urine odors, but these are not always safe to use around pets. Natural pet-urine odor remedies can be just as effective without harming your pets.
Things You'll Need
- Paper towels
- Measuring cups
- Baking soda
- Vacuum cleaner
- Dust pan
Fold three sheets of paper towels in half and lay them over any wet urine spots. Press down firmly with your foot, drawing as much urine from the surface as possible. Blotting up accidents as soon as they happen reduces odor and makes the spots easier to clean.
Rinse the spot with cool water to dilute residual urine. Pour 1 cup cool water on the spot and allow it to rest for 5 minutes before blotting it up with dry paper towels. Blot the stain until no more liquid remains.
Pour 1/2 cup of pure, undiluted white vinegar on the stain and leave it to soak for 30 minutes. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant that breaks down the protein and ammonia in the urine, removing the stain and eliminating odor. Soak up the vinegar with paper towels and allow the spot to air-dry overnight.
Sprinkle enough baking soda over the spot to completely cover it and leave it to rest for one hour before vacuuming or sweeping. The baking soda freshens the surface and removes any lingering pet urine odor.
Tips & Warnings
- Use full-strength white vinegar to remove odor. Undiluted vinegar has a strong odor, but the scent will evaporate as the vinegar dries.
