How to Paint a Porcelain Commode

How to Paint a Porcelain Commode thumbnail
Sand the porcelain to promote primer adhesion.

If you would like to add color to a porcelain commode, you can accomplish your goal by finishing it with the appropriate style of paint. Because porcelain is ill-suited for any type of paint adhesion, you must abrade the surface with sandpaper, prior to painting, or the finish will eventually chip and flake. In addition, because commodes are under frequent duress, they require a particular type of paint that will remain durable, use after use.

Things You'll Need

  • Trisodium phosphate cleanser
  • Coarse sponge
  • Rags
  • Towels
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • Masking paper
  • Heavy-duty fabric drop cloths
  • Professional painter's tape
  • Cans of acrylic spray primer
  • Cans of appliance epoxy spray paint

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the porcelain commode with a trisodium phosphate cleanser and a coarse sponge. Rinse the commode with wet rags. Dry the porcelain with towels.

    • 2

Promote adhesion by abrading the porcelain with sandpaper. Scour the commode until it feels slightly coarse.

    • 3

Cover hardware and other portions of the commode you do not want painted with painter's tape. Cover the floor beneath the commode with drop cloths. Cover areas surrounding the commode with masking paper.

    • 4

Coat the abraded porcelain commode with acrylic spray primer. Hold the can 8 inches from the porcelain as you apply. Wait 4 hours for the primed porcelain to dry.

    • 5

Coat the primed porcelain with appliance epoxy spray paint. Hold the can 8 inches from the porcelain as you apply. Wait 6 hours before using the commode.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never prime unsanded porcelain, or the primer will chip.

  • Never paint bare porcelain, or the paint will peel.

  • Do not use an ordinary acrylic latex or oil-based paint on a commode, or the finish will fail.
