How to Build a Hillbilly Golf Set?
Also known as bolo and ladder golf, hillbilly golf is an outdoor gaming activity commonly played at barbecues and picnics. A ladder golf game set includes two ladder structures, usually made of wood or PVC piping and six "bolos" made of two golf balls connected with a piece of rope. Sets can be purchased, but by following just a few simple steps, you can construct your own.
Things You'll Need
- Drill
- Saw
- 12 golf balls
- Nylon rope
- Scissors
- PVC piping
- 6 "T" connectors.
- 6 elbow connectors

Ladder Construction
-
1
Cut eight 1 foot-long pieces and seven 2 foot-long PVC pipe pieces with a saw.
-
2
Paint the PVC piping. Painting your hillbilly golf set will not affect game play, so it is optional.
-
-
3
Place T-connectors on the ends two of the one-foot pipes. Connect a one-foot pipe into each end of the two T-connectors, creating two three-section poles. Place elbow connectors at the corresponding ends of piping links. There should be three connectors open on each pole. Face connector holes in the same direction and connect piping lengths with two-foot piping pieces. This is the ladder portion of your hillbilly golf set.
-
4
Add elbow connectors to the end of a two-foot piping piece. Point connectors in the same direction and place a one-foot piece of piping into each, then place a T-connector at the free end of each. The diverging connection area of the T-connector should be running perpendicular to the poles it has just been connected to and facing upward.
-
5
Connect two-foot pieces of piping to the parallel openings on the T-connectors. Place elbow connectors to the open ends and angle them toward each other. Connect elbow connectors with a two-foot piece of piping. This is the base of the hillbilly golf ladder. Connect the open ends of the ladder portion into the open T-connectors and the ladder is complete.
Golf Ball Rope Construction
-
6
Drill a hole through the center of each golf ball.
-
7
Knot the end of the nylon rope and pass the free end through two golf balls.
-
8
Cut the rope to one foot in length between balls and tie the free end in a knot. This is the "bolo" that will be used with your hillbilly golf set. Repeat this process until you have six bolos.

Tips & Warnings
Avoid liquid-core balls, as there may be an explosive release off fluid upon the drilling of the balls.
