The classic appearance, dependability and functionality of Andersen double-hung windows makes them a continuing favorite for home designers, and the low maintenance combined with lasting quality appeal to the homeowner. When the time comes to repair, paint or service an Andersen double-hung window, removal of the window sashes may be necessary and Andersen has made that easy, as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Detach and remove the window screen, if applicable, by raising the bottom window sash and lifting the screen frame from the bottom clips, then pushing the bottom of the screen outward to release it from the top channel.

    • 2

Move the bottom window sash so that the base of the sash frame is approximately 8 inches above the sill or about halfway open.

    • 3

Pull the top edge of the bottom sash toward you to release the top of the window sash frame from the jamb’s vertical side channels. Some models of Andersen double-hung windows are equipped with a lever in the sash lock assembly that releases the sash's top spindles from the jamb channels. This lever should be pulled outward before pulling the top of the sash frame to free it.

    • 4

Pull the sash frame toward you until the sash is horizontal, then hold both sides of the frame securely and lift the right-hand side upward to release the sash guide pins from the jamb channel cams to remove the lower window frame from the jamb.

    • 5

Slide the upper window sash down to the approximate midpoint of the opening.

    • 6

Pull the top of the upper sash toward you to release the top of the frame from the jamb’s side channels and rotate it to horizontal, then lift the right-hand side upward, as with the lower sash, to free the sash guide pins and remove the sash from the jamb.
