How to Caulk Around New Windows

New windows must have a proper layer of caulk installed around the frame. The caulk helps keep the window insulated, and also ensures that no moisture or dirt can seep underneath the wooden frame. Water that gets underneath a wooden window frame can permanently damage the wood and cause it to rot. Do not power-wash a surface before caulking it, as this could make the caulking process less effective. Caulking products are available at local home improvement stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the window sill and frame with a damp rag to ensure the surface is clean.

    • 2

Load the caulk into the caulk gun by pulling the plunger back, inserting the tube of caulk, then pushing the plunger forward into the tube of caulk. Once you cut the tip of the caulk tube, you are ready to dispense the caulk by pulling the trigger on the caulk gun.

Apply a thin bead of caulk around the entire window frame. Wet your finger, then run your finger around the edges of the window frame to smooth the caulk in place. Allow the caulk to harden.

Scrape away any extra caulk with the putty knife.
