Learning Chen style Tai Chi is a difficult process.

Chen style Tai Chi is one of the oldest styles of the art form, originating during the Ching dynasty in Henan Province, China. For many generations, the techniques of Chen style Tai Chi were only handed down to members of the Chen village where the system was founded. It gradually filtered throughout the country and evolved into other forms, but Chen style Tai Chi is still taught today and learning it takes a significant amount of time and dedication.

Instructions

    • 1

Work on improving your flexibility and conditioning. Chen style Tai Chi has certain stances and movements that require muscle fluidity and many of the strikes and motions are performed at high speed and can tire someone not used to the exertion. Stretch daily to improve flexibility and do cardiovascular exercises such as jogging or cycling at least three days a week.

    • 2

Locate a Chen style Tai Chi school in your area by checking online or in the phone book. The initial ads are likely to only advertise "Tai Chi" without referencing the specific style so you will likely need to call or visit the school to find out if the style taught there has authentic Chen origins.

    • 3

Audit the school you are considering joining by watching several classes. Any reputable school should not have a problem with this. It gives you a chance to not only view the teaching methods and the class structure, but you also see how the instructor works and a good rapport between teacher and student is important in Tai Chi training.

    • 4

Practice the basic stances regularly. Most Chen Tai Chi instruction will begin with teachings on various stances that are used in beginning forms of the art. Practicing these stances and the transitions between them outside of class will greatly improve your time spent with the instructor.

    • 5

Meditate regularly. Meditation and mental focus are vital parts of Chen Tai Chi training and many schools will begin and end a class with meditation. It helps you focus on the task at hand and pushes other stress and distractions from your mind that can hinder performance.

    • 6

Attend class as often as you can to see the best results. At least four days a week is optimal if you are able to. It takes regular classes, practice and dedication to properly learn Chen style Tai Chi.

Tips & Warnings
