How to Cut Concrete Board

Concrete backer board consists of concrete sandwiched between two layers of mesh. The mesh keeps the board from cracking. When installing concrete board for tile installation or as a fire barrier for a fireplace, you might have to cut the board to size. Cutting concrete board with a power saw creates a lot of dust and causes excessive wear on a power saw. One method of cutting creates no dust and cuts quicker than a power saw.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Fine-tipped permanent marker
  • Straightedge
  • Carbide tipped cutter
  • Wood rasp
  • Place a concrete board flat on the floor with the smooth side of the board facing up.

  • Pull a tape measure along one side of the concrete board. Mark the cut length on the smooth face of the concrete board with a fine-tipped permanent marker. Move the tape measure to the other side of the board and repeat the process to place a second length mark on the board's face.

  • Align one side of a straightedge with the two length marks. Drag a fine-tipped permanent marker along the aligned edge to create a cut line on the face of the concrete board. Remove the straightedge from the concrete board.

  • Pull the carbide tipped cutter along the marked line several times to score the outer mesh of the concrete board.

  • Stand the scored concrete board on edge. Tap behind the score to snap the board to length.

  • Lay the snapped board flat on the floor with the snapped side of the concrete board facing the floor.

  • Pull the carbide tipped cutter along the connected mesh until the cut piece pulls freely from the concrete board.

  • Slide the wood rasp along the snapped edge to even out jagged edges.
