How to Store Cross Country Skis
Cross country skis are a small investment in an enjoyable and healthy winter activity. Whether you're a novice or an enthusiast, and whether you opt for groomed trails or off-track areas, your skis need to be in top condition. Well-maintained skis can last for years. Cleaning, repair and temperature are important for proper storage of a pair of cross country skis. Skiers need to clean and store their cross country skis correctly to protect them throughout the off-season months.

1
Clean your skis with a clean damp cloth at the end of the seasib. Use wax remover on a second cloth to clean the kick zone, sides and tops of the skis as needed. Apply soft wax or base-wax to the glide zone with an iron. Use low heat while applying a generous amount of wax to the base of the ski forming a protective coating. Scrape the liquid wax and dirt from the ski while it is still warm. Allow the skis and wax to cool.

2
Gently scrape the excess wax and dirt that rises on the ski surface with a nylon brush.

3
Repair any damage, holes and scratches on your skis, then apply a thick layer of wax--one that would be appropriate for the first ski trip of the winter. The wax will protect your skis from scratches and dust buildup during storage.
-
4
Stack one skit on top of the other. Use ski ties, packing tape or rubber bands to secure them together at the tips and tail ends--but don't tie them strapped tightly together.
-
5
Place or hang your skis on a ski rack in a consistently cool and dry room or basement. Keep them out of direct sunlight.
