How to Bi-Wire Car Audio Speakers

Bi-wiring is a technique that takes advantage of the design of certain car speakers to get better sound quality. In bi-wiring, separate speaker wires are run from an amplifier to the tweeter and woofer of the speaker. It's important to note that you can only use bi-wiring with speakers that are designed for bi-wiring. Since most speakers have only one set of input terminals, you cannot bi-wire them. But with select models that have two sets of input terminals, you can bi-wire. Check the manual for your speakers for information on whether your car speakers can be bi-wired.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two lengths of speaker wire for each speaker you're bi-wiring. Each wire needs to be long enough to reach from the amplifier that's borrowing your speakers to the location the speakers are mounted at. This will vary depending upon your car and your car audio system.

    • 2

Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of each wire with a set of wire strippers.

    • 3

Slide spade connectors onto one of the ends of each speaker wire, then crimp them into place with a crimp tool.

    • 4

Slide the spade connectors of one of the speaker wires onto the inputs for the tweeter. Slide the spade connectors of the other speaker wire onto the inputs for woofer of your speaker. Consult the manual for your speaker if you're uncertain about which terminals to use--different speaker brands are configured differently.

    • 5

Loosen the screw terminals of your car amplifier. Connect the ends of both speaker wires to the terminals. Tighten the terminals to hold the wires in place.
