Anyone can become an actor, singer or dancer by studying each discipline and getting involved with community theater. A deeper commitment is required to work as a professional in these fields–along with a combination of talent, perseverance and networking.

How to become an actor, singer and dancer

1. Choose a performance-related class. Developing acting, singing and dancing skills by studying with the appropriate teacher, will enhance your artistry and foster discipline.

2. Call community theater artistic directors, producers and actors. Community theater can become a place to hone your craft. Many professional performers started in small, local theaters. Even if it means starting out as a stage hand or assistant set designer, the environment at community theaters is nurturing for all disciplines.

3. Talk to personal coaches and choose someone with lots of training. Don't settle for the first person you meet with. Interview several coaches to make certain they have the background and training you'll need to advance your skill. If you're older, consider enrolling in a dramatic arts program at a university or college.

4. Sign up for singing lessons. Again, do your research–don't settle for a teacher who lacks experience.

5. Call dance instructors, sign up for classes and competitions. Competitions will give you lots of exposure and you'll gain insight into the competitive dynamic.

6. Hire a photographer to take headshots. Most major cities such as Atlanta, New York City, Boston, Dallas and Los Angeles have talent agencies that seek clients capable of acting, modeling, singing and dancing. These agencies want to see a headshot first. Do your research and make sure the agency is legitimate. Agencies with a good reputation won't require you to pay any fees upfront to secure their representation. Be ready for rejection, but be persistent in locating a talent agency willing to accept you as a client.

7. Audition for professional and non-professional jobs. Whether you have an agent or not you can still attend some open casting calls. Read the industry trade publications to find out what open calls are available. Auditioning also helps you network and make valuable contacts in the industry.
