How to Install Decorative Cabinet Door Knobs

Adding new knobs to your kitchen cabinet doors can help modernize your kitchen.

Cabinet door knobs are a small part of your home, but a decorative door knob can have a big impact on your interior design. Decorative cabinet door knobs are available in a wide variety of materials including brass, stainless steel, wood, glass, pewter and others. Colorful painted door knobs can add a touch of whimsy to a cold or boring kitchen while a stainless steel cabinet door knob in a bold geometric shape may help modernize outdated cabinets.

Things You'll Need

• Measuring tape
• Cabinet door knob template
• Pencil
• Drill
• Decorative cabinet door knobs
• Screws
• Screwdriver

Instructions

1. Measure the thickness of your cabinet doors to ensure that you purchase the right screws for your cabinet door knobs. The length of the screws should be approximately the thickness of your cabinet door plus 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch.

2. Purchase a cabinet door knob template. This item will help you place the knobs in the same location on each cabinet door.

3. Place the cabinet door knob template on your cabinet door and make a mark with a pencil where you wish to place the decorative knob.

4. Mark each cabinet door using the same hole on the template.

5. Drill a hole into the pencil mark on each cabinet door. Use a drill bit the same size as or up to 1/64 inch larger than the screws for your decorative cabinet knobs.

6. Insert a screw into the hole through the back of the cabinet door.

7. Place a screwdriver into the head of the screw to hold it firmly in place, flush against the cabinet door.

8. Twist the decorative knob onto the end of the screw at the front of the cabinet door. Hold the screwdriver still to prevent the screw from turning as you twist on the knob.

9. Repeat steps six through eight to install all of your decorative cabinet door knobs.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are replacing existing hardware, insert a screwdriver into the head of each screw and twist the existing knobs off counter-clockwise. Follow steps seven and eight to install your new decorative cabinet door knobs.
