DIY for Floor Speaker Stands

DIY for Floor Speaker Stands thumbnail
Mounting speakers on floor stands gives them ideal placement.

To get the best possible sound from your audio system, set up your speakers for optimal performance. Placement of your speakers within a room is one of the most important aspects of your setup. Using floor stands for speakers allows you to place the speakers slightly off the ground, ideally at ear level while seated. Commercial speaker stands can be expensive, but if you’re on a tight budget you can still get the style and performance benefits by making your own speaker stands.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in the room where the speaker stands will be installed. Place the lamp where you will install the speakers, and mark the lamp where the speaker should be placed at ear level. Using whiteout, place marks on the lamp that correspond to where the top and bottom of the speaker will attach to the lamp.

    • 2

Cut the lamp right below the mark of the top of the speaker using a hacksaw. When cutting the lamp, you should cut through the internal lamp cord as well.

    • 3

Pull out the cut lamp cord (it often goes through the lamp's base) so there are no cords running through the lamp.

    • 4

Hold the speaker up to the newly cut lamp, lining up the bottom of the speaker with the bottom marking, and make another mark on the lamp at the point of the speaker's mount. This will look like a metal hole on the back of the speaker, right above the speaker wire terminals, where a speaker would connect to a mounting bracket.

    • 5

Drill a hole into the lamp at the point of the speaker's mount.

    • 6

Drive a screw into the recently made hole on the lamp. Leave the screw sticking out slightly so that the screw can make contact with the speaker's mount.

    • 7

Drill a larger hole underneath the speaker mount. This will be the place for the speaker wire to connect.

    • 8

Run the speaker wire through the bottom of the lamp and up through the newly drilled speaker wire hole. Remove any remaining whiteout markings.

    • 9

Balance the speaker onto the screw so that it rests firmly on the mount.

    • 10

Connect the speaker wire to the speaker's terminals.
