How to Set a Have a Heart Trap

How to Set a Have a Heart Trap thumbnail
Animals like raccoons can be humanely trapped and released live with Havahart traps.

Select an appropriately-sized Havahart trap for the animal you would like to trap. For example, extra-small traps are appropriate for chipmunks and mice, while extra-large traps are appropriate for armadillos, raccoons and opossums. Visit Havahart's website or view the trap's instruction manual for recommended bait for different animals. For example, apples and canned pet food are appropriate for opossums, but a mouse would prefer peanut butter or sunflower seeds. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Two-Door Traps

    • 1

Set a two-door trap by turning the door locks. They must be in the “open” position.

    • 2

Open the doors by pressing the straight trigger rod.

    • 3

Position the bait inside the bait pan while the doors are open.

    • 4

Press the offset loop, which is located on the looped trigger rod. Place the flat end of this rod underneath the flat part of the trigger on the bait pan. When you are finished, the bait pan should be level and the doors should both be open.

    • 5

Rotate the door knobs until the door locks are resting on the doors.

    One-Door Trap

    • 6

Bait a one-door trap before you set it. Place the bait at the back of the cage, behind the pan.

    • 7

Push the door lock so that it is against the door. Lift and hold the door so that it is about one inch off the ground.

    • 8

Turn the trigger rod so that it is positioned about 45 degrees from the trap.

    • 9

Lift the door another three inches up and hold it there.

    • 10

Grasp the trigger rod with your other hand and rotate it downwards. Arrange the trigger rod so that the end inside the cage is positioned underneath the door's raised lip. Do not remove this hand from the trigger rod; hold it in place.

Move the trigger pan rod so that it rests against the first trigger rod. Release both trigger rods, but be careful not to disturb their positions.
