Any computer can be used as a server.

Counter Strike is an online first-person shooting game that allows players to connect and compete with each other over the Internet. All online Counter Strike games are hosted on a server, which is a computer dedicated to running the game. Any individual can host his own Counter Strike server and make it either open to the public or available only to invited individuals. While anyone can host a Counter Strike server, it is important to set it up correctly to avoid computer problems and expensive Internet bills.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and request information on your bandwidth limitations and speeds. If your Internet speeds are below DSL levels, request to have your subscription updated or have a faster Internet service, such as broadband cable, installed.

    • 2

Set up a laptop or desktop computer. The computer should have a multi-core processor and at least 1GB of RAM in order to run the software properly. Connect the server to the Internet using an Ethernet cable.

    • 3

Download the Counter Strike source code from the official Counter Strike website. Run the EXE file and wait for the program to install. Depending on the speed of your server, this could take an hour or longer.

    • 4

Enter the CVAR parameters for your server's install by clicking on the 'CStrike' folder inside the install directory, then opening the 'server.cfg' file with a text editing program. For each CVAR line, add the number for parameter. For example, under 'mp_buytime', add a number figure such as 'mp_buytime 5', where '5' is the number of seconds players are allowed to buy weapons. The CVAR parameters will allow you to control what players can do on your sever, including spawning, banning, explosion damage, freezetime and more.

Double-click the server GUI icon. A dialog box will appear prompting you to enter information about your server before it starts. Enter a name for you server and choose limitations for maps, number of players, duration and enter a server password.

    • 6

Click the button that says 'Start Server'. The server will launch and will be available to public players.
