A DeWalt 4.5-inch angle grinder is a very versatile tool used for many projects. It is compact and can reach into tight areas. The tool has a large variety of wheels to use for different applications, including sanding discs, cut off wheels, grinding wheels and wire wheels. With your DeWalt angle grinder, you can cut an object, grind the cut down and finally sand it to a smooth surface with one tool and three separate wheels.
Things You'll Need
- Backing flange
- Clamp nut
- Cut off wheel
- Adjustable wrench
Turn the angle grinder “On/Off” switch to the “Off” position. Unplug the tool from the electrical receptacle or extension cord.
Turn the tool to locate the nut on the bottom that holds the wheels in place.
Press the spindle lock button above the wheel on the top of the angle grinder and hold it in.
Place an adjustable wrench on the nut on the bottom of the wheel and turn it counterclockwise. Release the spindle lock button. Pull the nut straight off and pull the current wheel straight off as well. Set both aside.
Center the hole in the middle of the unthreaded backing flange and place it on the spindle with the raised section pointing upwards. The spindle is the metal round piece in the middle of the angle grinder head, on which accessories fit.
Slide a cut off wheel on top of the backing flange.
Place the threaded clamping nut on top of the cut off wheel.
Press the spindle lock button and hold it in. Turn the clamping nut clockwise with an adjustable wrench to tighten on the angle grinder.
Tips & Warnings
- The spindle lock button keeps the spindle from turning for loosening and tightening the retaining screw on the bottom of the angle grinder.
- Cut off wheels do not have threads in the center to screw onto the angle grinder spindle. Therefore, a cut off wheel requires an unthreaded backing flange and a threaded clamping nut to secure the wheel in place.
- Never remove the guard from an angle grinder. Position the guard so that it is between the user and the object on which he is working. This will keep sparks and small pieces of metal or other materials from landing on the user.
