Obtain contact information for an attorney licensed in your state who also regularly handles cases in the area of law that relates to your question. Contact your local lawyer referral service to acquire contact information for a lawyer who may be able to address your issue. Lawyer referral services are typically maintained by your county or state’s bar association. You may also find attorneys and law firms by searching your local yellow pages or performing an online search.

Call the law firm or lawyer that you selected. Ask the secretary if the firm offers free consultations. Many firms provide this service to potential clients in order to find out if they have a case that the lawyer or firm would be interested in handling. However, if your question involves criminal charges, you may have to pay a consultation fee for a meeting. Ask to set up a phone or in-person consultation if you find the terms of the consultation agreeable.

Prepare a list of facts and questions to ask the attorney during your phone or in-person meeting. Although your initial question will probably be whether you have a case or need to hire an attorney, you should also be prepared to ask the lawyer about his or her fee structure, experience and terms of representation. Additionally, take time before your meeting to write down all facts relating to your potential case, including dates, names, the address of an incident location and any witnesses that you are aware of.
