Shutters can be a great addition to your home.

When you own your own home, you want it to look good from the inside and from the outside. On the inside, you coordinate your furniture, paint colors and accessories to create a unified look and feel; on the outside, you might hire landscapers to make your yard look picture perfect. To make the exterior of your home look better, you can replace the roof, get new siding or dress up your windows. Many homeowners choose to add shutters. These can be great accents to your home, and they can make your basement windows appear larger. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a color for your shutters. You may want to place the shutters on all your windows, not just your basement windows, so make sure they match the rest of the outside of your home.

    • 2

Purchase shutters that are approximately the length of your basement window. You want them to line up with the top of the windows and stop just below the bottom, usually by an inch or two.

    • 3

Nail the shutters in place around your basement windows. The edge of the shutters should be nailed onto the right and left side of the exterior window casing.

    • 4

Nail a wooden ledge below the shutters. This will really sell the appearance of larger windows. The wooden ledge should be approximately the length of the window and should be placed just below the bottom edge of the shutters.
