How to Soundproof a Wall With Foam

How to Soundproof a Wall With Foamthumbnail
The unique shape of acoustic foam is what makes it a great soundproofing material.

Acoustic foam is a special type of foam designed specifically for sound absorption. It is most commonly used for soundproofing rooms and walls in recording studios. Acoustic foam has a shape similar to egg carton. It is this unique shape that traps and absorbs sound waves. Soundproofing a wall with foam is an easy project that requires little tools and can be done in about an hour, two at most, depending on the size of the wall.

    Things You'll Need

    • Tape measure
    • Acoustic foam
    • Foam adhesive or staple gun
    • Ladder
      • 1

Measure the length and height of the wall to determine how much foam you will need. Acoustic foam is sold in square sheets, so the best way to do this is by finding out how many square inches the wall is. Multiply the length of the wall in inches by the height in inches to calculate the total number of square inches.

Spray foam adhesive on the wall. Foam adhesive will bond to any type of material. It's best to do this one square at a time so the adhesive does not dry before you put the foam up.

      • 3

Apply acoustic foam to the wall. Start in one corner of the wall, and firmly press the acoustic foam against the wall until it sticks to the adhesive. Work in rows, from top to bottom until the entire wall is covered. If you are not using a foam adhesive, you can use a staple gun to staple the foam squares to the wall.
